Writing in a World of AI

Published by wpusername6427 on

Dear Fellow Writer,

With Artificial Intelligence changing and improving day by day, there can exist for some writers a temptation to use AI in their books. But using AI to write your novel or to give plot ideas is not the answer.

I believe that in order to write a meaningful book there must be imperfections. Human error. Because something that reflects human nature. This is why Artificial Intelligence, in my opinion, can never touch our hearts the same way as something written by a human. It is the imperfections that distinguish you and I from a machine.

If I could snap my fingers and rid this world of AI, I would. But that is not the world we live in. To be clear, I am not going to claim that AI cannot be useful in this world or that it should never be used. That is unrealistic. And living in fear of AI is not helpful for anyone as this tool will continue to expand and improve regardless of how you and I feel about it. But I do not believe AI has a place in writing our books. Outside of giving plot structure or character templates to fill in and a few other things NOT involved in the actual creation of your story, I do not see how AI should or could be involved in writing a novel.

One reason would be that when someone gives a LLM your idea, the LLM has the idea forever. Your unique idea is given away before you have the opportunity to release the book for yourself. And when the machine thinks for you, not only is your story not yours anymore but your creative muscle weakens. Like lifting weights, we must keep writing and keep the creativity flowing.

But I do not want to close this blog with anyone fearing AI. I want you to feel encouraged, because when you put your heart and soul into a book, I believe that people will notice.

AI use in books will be an inevitable reality for a portion of the literature world, don’t let it be part of yours. Embrace the writing process. Embrace the eccentricities that make your writing YOURS. Embrace sitting in the unknown of your novel.
Here are some suggestions to help you write instead of turning to AI:
  1. Make playlists for your story and characters
  2. Go on a walk outside and clear your mind
  3. Write stream of consciousness for 5 minutes
  4. Create a mood board for your novel
  5. Read a book and write down what the authors does well

Now go write your next bestseller!

Sincerely,

Katie (a fellow writer)
